Platelet Count (PC)

The Platelet Count (PC) test is a laboratory examination used to determine the concentration of platelets, also known as thrombocytes, in a sample of blood. Platelets are small cell fragments produced in the bone marrow and play a crucial role in hemostasis (blood clotting) by forming clots to prevent excessive bleeding. Abnormalities in platelet count can indicate various medical conditions, including thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), thrombocytosis (high platelet count), and disorders affecting platelet function. Thrombocytopenia may result from decreased production of platelets in the bone marrow, increased destruction of platelets in the bloodstream, or sequestration of platelets in the spleen.
