Immunoglobulin – IgE Total

The Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Total test is a laboratory assay used to quantify the concentration of IgE antibodies in the bloodstream. IgE is a type of antibody produced by the immune system in response to allergens, substances that trigger allergic reactions. IgE antibodies play a central role in the pathogenesis of allergic and hypersensitivity disorders by initiating and mediating allergic responses, such as immediate hypersensitivity reactions, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), allergic asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and allergic conjunctivitis. The IgE Total test measures the overall level of IgE antibodies circulating in the blood, which can be elevated in individuals with allergic conditions or parasitic infections. Elevated IgE levels may indicate sensitization to specific allergens, although the test does not identify the specific allergen responsible for the allergic reaction.
