Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (Beta HCG)

The Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (Beta HCG) test is a diagnostic tool used to measure the concentration of the hormone beta HCG in the blood or urine. Beta HCG is produced by the placenta shortly after implantation occurs during pregnancy. Thus, this test is primarily utilized to confirm pregnancy. In early pregnancy, beta HCG levels typically rise rapidly and can be detected in the blood or urine within days after conception, making it an effective method for detecting pregnancy even before a missed period. Beta HCG levels usually double every 48 to 72 hours during the first few weeks of pregnancy, peaking around 8 to 11 weeks gestation, and then gradually decline. In addition to pregnancy testing, the Beta HCG test may also be employed to diagnose certain medical conditions, such as ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, or certain types of cancer, including testicular, ovarian, or gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.
